FS#24 - Rebuild Python to not require $PYTHONHOME to be set
Long story short, Python fails to work if PYTHONHOME is not set to '/'. This creates issues with certain environments, including autotools (!). This is not the default behavior, and is possible caused by some of the patches we apply.
There was an extensive chat in #python (edited for readability) recorded at http://pastebin.com/9hkH3vtT .
I've set the priority to low because of the potential workaround (editing Makefiles), because we are all crazy busy right now, and because a quick scan didn't show any patch that obviously changed getpath.c - which may make this a pretty difficult task.
